A Scheme for Supporting Voice over IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Network

چکیده
Along with the widespread use of the Internet has come a considerable increase in the variety of applications being tried out, one of the most promising of which is packet telephony. Meanwhile, with the spread of the wireless local area network (WLAN) environment, there is growing demand for support for real-time traffic over WLAN. In this paper, we propose a modified MAC protocol that supports voice traffic over the IEEE 802.11 WLAN. The proposed scheme adapts the power-saving (PS) mode of the IEEE 802.11 specifications such that it rivals the TDMA mode in carrying real-time traffic and is compatible with the IEEE 802.11 standard. Simulation results obtained for the proposed scheme show that it does not degrade the performance of CSMA/CA, i.e., the contention mode of IEEE 802.11, and that it provides good voice quality for WLAN.

IEEE 802.11 called service integration multiple access (SIMA) is proposed in this paper. SIMA is designed to support voice and data transmissions over wireless local area networks (WLANs). Since both voice and data traffics have different characteristics and service requirements, we use a hybrid scheme between time division multiple access (TDMA) which is suitable for constant-bit-rate (CBR) vo...
متن کاملVoice over Wireless LAN via IEEE 802.16 Wireless MAN and IEEE 802.11 Wireless Distribution System
Today, IEEE 802.11 Wireless LANs (WLAN) have been widely deployed to provide wireless broadband access in local areas such as campuses or offices. Most of the WLANs are connected to the backbone via a wired distribution system (DS). IEEE 802.16 Wireless MANs (WMAN) aim to extend the wireless broadband access up to kilometers to facilitate the long-range “last-mile” solution. For short-range ext...

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...
متن کاملIEEE 802.11 over multi-hop wireless networks: problems and new perspectives
The distributed coordination function (DCF) mode of the IEEE 802.11 MAC standard, though proposed for medium access in wireless local area networks, is seen as the de-facto medium access standard in multi-hop wireless networks. In this paper we contend that the unique characteristics that differentiate multi-hop wireless ad-hoc networks from local area wireless networks render the IEEE 802.11 M...
